THE VASQUEZ VOICE

TURNING OVER A NEW YEAR
This is the final issue of the 2009-2010 Vasquez Voice.  With the next update, this page will be archived and available for reference. So to wrap it up . . .

CHANGE YER PARTNERS
Dr. Woodard has formally and officially been chained to the district Superintendent's post, where he will be directing the progress of all the district's schools. He continues driving forward the construction of the new VHS campus, and he will be working closely with new principal Dr. Ruben Zepeda. A resident of Palmdale, Dr. Zepeda comes to us with a wealth of administrative experience and an ambitious vision for VHS. English 12 teacher Cindy Fernandes has also moved up into an administrative position at the district. Her long and dedicated tenure with VHS has been a priceless benefit to hundreds of Vasquez grads.

AWARDS, AWARDS, AWARDS
Congratulations to the eleven seniors who maintained a 4.0 or better gpa over all four years. These and other remarkable graduating students were honored on June 8th, 6:00-8:00 in the High Desert MPR.

Freshman, sophomores, and juniors got their moment under the spotlight on June 1st during Night of the Stars. School awards and refreshments were provided by PTSO.
See photos of award honorees in our photo gallery.

M&M NIGHT AND BLACK OUT BINGO
The Bybee family embraced the phrase "Winner need not be present" and sailed away on a Spring Break cruise. Said Denise: " I was playing Bingo onboard, and I kept saying 'I dunno, I just feel like I'm going to get lucky!'"

Bybee Family win $2500 Bingo
The Bybees were among the first to become PTSO members for the 2009-2010 school year, joining at the Mustang Flat-Out Gallop level--which included a Spring Bingo ticket.  Pictured from left: PTSO Prez Janet Long, Sara, Denise, Madison, Dale, and Danyel Bybee. The $2500 prize was handed off at the Harmonic Bronze Spring Concert at High Desert on April 17.

It should be added that all those who were present at La Cabana on April 1st for M&M Night were winners as well. The spirit of the evening ran high, the food was great, the waiters exhausted, and a wonderful time was had by all. Nineteen hundred dollars  was added to the PTSO treasury, for which we are grateful and with which we are planning great things. Thanks to all who participated.

VHS NEW CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION
After a thorough presentation by Interim Superintendent Woodard, the board has given direction to pursue a plan that would allow the temporary campus to remain in its current place during development and construction of the new campus. The portables will not be moved to the parking lot, as previously proposed. Dr. Woodard also urged that modular construction not be used, as traditional buildings would be more satisfactory in the short and long term. The new campus will be built on the lower level property fronting Escondido and cost an estimated $27 million.
Vasquez High School New Permanent Campus
The current parking area will remain and eventually serve the athletic fields. A softball field is also part of the plan, though it isn't pictured here--it will be either north of the current parking area or in that empty spot to the right of the football field and basketball courts (see below).  A new parking area will be added with access across Escondido Creek. The admin building, library, cafeteria, and gym are on the south and southwest end of the campus; the classrooms (to house 800 in phase 1) line out on either side of the quad.
VHS New Permanent Phase 2Eventually, more classroom buildings will square off the quad, and other facilities, such as a track field, may be added after the demolition of the old campus.

The timeline, which includes planning, grading, approvals by a multitude of state and county agencies, and construction, has a tentative occupancy date of late 2013.

All of which depends on getting those state matching funds. Planning may proceed up to a point, but construction cannot begin until a statewide school bond is passed and matching funds become available.

BUDGET CUTS
The school board met on March 4th to provide Interim Superintedent Woodard with direction on how to deal with projected budget cuts. The problem: The County requires a balanced three-year budget that includes a 3% reserve for economic emergencies; the state projects a 30% reduction in the money it distributes to schools by 2013; the district must offer quality programs--that is, continue to provide teachers, materials, and support staff to keep things running well. The impact:
Because the district managed to put some money in the bank over the last few years, the district's finances are overall sound, though feeling the strain. In previous years, VHS offered several sparsely attended classes--this is no longer feasible, but college prep courses and popular electives will still be available. There may be a limited number of layoffs throughout the district when the state decides how much of its budget will go to education. In the meantime, the state requires that teachers that may be let go next year, must be notified by March 15, even though most or all of them will likely be retained. Construction of the high school is funded by  Measure CF bonds, which have already been sold. This money cannot be taken by the state and can be used for no other purpose than building VHS. All in all, we are moving from a spaghetti budget to a capellini budget, but we are in no danger of starvation. There will be no furlough days or wage decreases, and layoffs are being kept to a minimum. There has never been, however, a better time to support PTSO.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE
A life is not properly measured by the number of people one has loved, but by the number of people one has been loved by. On February 20th, a full day (and on into the evening) was devoted to a celebration of the life of Kim Milewsky--who bid the rest of us farewell and began a new project on February 2--and EVERYBODY came to the party. There was standing room only at the High Desert MPR, and the crowd grew rather than trickled away as tales were told by those who were touched by Kim in large and small ways. Things then shifted over to the Agua Dulce Women's Club for a huge potluck feed, then in true Kim fashion, back to the 49er for dancing.

Though Kim was sometimes hindered (ever so slightly!) by her illness in doing everything she wished to do at VHS, as Hospitality Chair, she devoted what time and energies she had to seeing to the comfort and morale of our teachers and students--feeding them, encouraging them, perking up their daily environment with a little tasteful landscaping.  Our Number One booster, Kim led in raising funds and drove hard for the permanent campus that will finally be a reality. We are still pondering the most fitting way to honor Kim's legacy at VHS. We aim to do something that will not only commemorate her contributions but also to perpetuate her efforts to provide for our communities' children the best possible high school experience. Kim takes with her our love and gratitude and leaves with us her optimism and inspiration. Thanks a bunch, girl. See ya later!

LITERARY MAGAZINE IN SECOND YEAR
The 2010 issue of the VHS literary magazine Pour Some English on Me is gelling as students submit poems, short stories, essays, and artwork for publication later this year. This fantastic program was developed for Vasquez last year by Freshman Advisor and English 9/10 teacher Jan Hudson. Mrs. Hudson approached PTSO with a proposal to provide seed money for a self-perpetuating student publication that would reward the creativity and talent of contributing students. We were very impressed with the high level of artistic and literary pieces that appeared in the 2009 edition. We eagerly look forward to this year's magazine.

ACADEMIC DECATHLON BRINGS HOME
GOLD, SILVER, AND BRONZE
The 2010 Academic Decathlon Team outperformed their bigger, better funded rivals in the AV and SCV, scooping up eleven medals at this year's brain-off against schools all over LA County. The decathlon is a prestigious academic event in which a topic is announced and teams study like crazy in preparation for two intense days of testing--not your uncle's standardized test, either. The first day of testing consists of writing essays, presenting speeches, and being interviewed. This is followed by the Superquiz, testing competitors' knowledge of math, science, art, music, and economics. The main topic this year was the French Revolution. Last Thursday, our Decathletes were treated to an awards banquet in which they shone conspicuously. Medalists include Chelsea Stewart, who received the Gold for Interview; Molly Smith, who received the Gold for Language and Literature, the Silver for both Art and Science, and the Bronze for Speech, Interview, and Economics; Karisa Wymer, who received the Bronze for Music; and Nick Loporchio, who received the Bronze for Interview. Molly also received Gold medals for Highest Scoring in Division and Highest Scoring on Team.  Much applause goes to our medalists and to their teammates, Giancarlo Quezada, Brandon Roque, Wesley Bowers, Justin McClendon, and Derek Finger. Profound and abundant thanks go to Coach Kari Owens, who devoted countless hours to helping the team get primed for this grueling event.

GIRLS SOCCER AND BASKETBALL MAKE PLAYOFFS
Girls Soccer and Girls Basketball qualified for CIF ! Great job, ladies. We are very proud of you! For excellent coverage of Mustang sports, see the back pages of the Country Journal or the Acton-Agua Dulce News.

AV SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION DINNER
On January 26th, VHS PTSO, along with the Boosters from High Desert School and Agua Dulce Elementary and the Meadowlark PTO, contributed their time and talents to decorating the High Desert mpr. School boards across the AV take turns hosting this annual dinner. Our mission: to give the place that special ambience without spending any money. Rest assured, PTSO money is never used for any purpose not directly benefitting students at VHS. We were happy, however, to help our district sparkle and shine in the eyes of its AV peers. Many thanks to those who helped set up and to Anne and Caitlyn Dwyer and Charleen Klein for cleaning up the aftermath. A special thank  you to Michelle Risser for lending her beautiful snowman collection and table mirrors for centerpieces. Culinary Arts catered a superb stuffed chicken cordon bleu dinner.

In praise of Culinary Arts . . . the dinner they served was top-flight, restaurant-quality prepared and presented. From the salad (made with the really good baby greens with a bunch of yummy stuff mixed in there) to the big ol' german chocolate cupcakes with little exquisitely molded dark chocolate leaves on top--every bite was absolutely delicious. Did I mention I'd already had dinner? I just came to help with washing the dishes. But no, there weren't any dishes to wash--the kids washed everything as they went along. How's that for a great volunteering gig!? Now let me describe the scene in the kitchen. Picture a long, narrow kitchen with a long worktable lengthwise down the middle. Now put about twenty high school kids squished cheek by jowel on either side of the table, forty pairs of hands deftly and diligently (and FAST!)  working away on the task at hand. Then there would be these do-sie-do's where a body carrying something would slip over to a different station, and chaos DIDN'T ensue! Things were unpacked as needed, immediately washed and repacked, and by the time the guests were savoring their cupcakes, all the equipment was on its way back to VHS. All of this carried out by smiling kids, clearly proud of their achievement. Hats off to Mrs. Barnes and her amazing crew!

MIDWINTER'S NIGHT MASQUERADE BALL
Held on January 29th in the Meadowlark Ballroom and sponsored by the VHS Junior Class, the Midwinter's Night Masquerade Ball  was a spectacular success. Junior Class Officers President Halie Klein, Vice President Lindsey Dart, Secretary Sherie Peterson and Treasurer Rocky Mazorow spent many hours creating a memorable evening for the students at VHS. Attendance was 110 students. The ballroom was gorgeously decorated in purple wall coverings, snow glistening with white lights, and hundreds of balloons. Delicious appetizers supplied by the Junior Class parents provided nourishment lest the dancers should grow faint, and SOS entertainment kept the dancers moving throughout the night. VHS seniors said, "This was the best dance we have had in our four years at Vasquez." Others commented, "It was so much fun," "I love all the decorations," and "Great food. We didn't even have to eat dinner." Some of the memorable moments of the evening was when a group of senior boys lured Mr. Jorgensen inside to check on an "incident." Then, with the students laughing, Mr. Jorgensen found himself surrounded by the students on the dance floor. With a big grin, Mr. Jorgensen showed off some of his own dance moves. The students really enjoyed having Mrs. Hudson hit the dance floor while she was rocking out to some fun songs. A highlight of the evening was  the coronation.

800 SCHOOL
That's a goal, not a toll-free number.  Principal Woodard appreciates what many of us have been saying for a long time--that VHS is an 800 school with underperforming test scores. First, some vocabulary. CST: the standardized (STAR) test that our 9th-11th graders take to show how well they have mastered the California content standards. These test scores are compared with the scores of all the other schools in the state.  In particular, we are compared with schools with similar characteristics, such as San Marino, La Canada, Alhambra, and Beverly Hills--some of the best performing schools in the country. The playing field may be a little lopsided, but those well funded schools are our rivals. API: Academic Performance Index. This is the overall score that a school gets when a frighteningly complicated formula is applied to the combination of all its students' scores. While an API may go as high as 1000, a ranking of 800 is considered pretty buff. VHS is currently hovering just below 700.  MOTIVATION: This is what kids have in varying degrees when approached with a challenging task.  Some kids would volunteer to take the STAR tests even if they didn't have to. Some take them with a sense of dogged determination. Some take them grudgingly. Some, unfortunately, only doodle and drag down the whole school. VHS is adopting a new approach to STAR testing.  This will include a number of rewards for students who ramp up the effort or maintain advanced scores. LEVELING UP: This is when a student scores high enough to put him or her in a higher level. The levels are Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Below Basic, and Far Below Basic. Kids, bring it up a level from last year, and you will improve your grade in that class.  In addition, there will be incentives for being in attendence and actually taking the tests--for the doodlers. See the January minutes for more details. Dr. Woodard and Mr. Jorgensen will be addressing the students, explaining the consequences poor test scores have for the school and the upside of doing their best. For more information on STAR testing visit http://star.cde.ca.gov/.

WELCOME CENTER/LIBRARY
The Vasquez Library is now open.  Justin Hillemann has been working hard to bring resources to our students and make a full selection of books available for borrowing. In addition, there are ten computers and two printers now set up so that students can do research, write papers, check out college sites, and check up on their stock portfolios. The library has a dual purpose as a Welcome Center to help integrate EL students and their parents into the VHS family.

STUDENT RECOGNITION
One of the nicest jobs for the PTSO is providing the end of year awards for outstanding students. But June is too far away. We would like to demonstrate ongoing recognition for students who particularly deserve it—not necessarily because of a high gpa, but because they are in class putting out 100%, exemplifying the best in attitude, attendance, and effort. A new Student of the Month program, under Charleen Klein's guiding hand, is being inaugurated with the second semester. Honored students will receive a special certificate, and a page in the yearbook will be dedicated to these great kids.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MRS. PIERSON-STRAKA GOING?
As many of you know, Mrs. Pierson-Straka for the last 6 years has been taking students all around the world to experience the culture and languages of other countries.  She has already taken students to Peru, Spain, Costa Rica, France, Italy, Panama, and Greece.  This summer they will be heading back to her "home" country of Spain, where she lived during college.  They will also be traveling to Portugal and Morocco!  It is not too late to sign up, so if you and/or your student are interested in going please contact Mrs. Pierson-Straka at connect2spanish@gmail.com.  You can also check out the trip website at www.myexplorica.com/Pierson-4970 to see our intinerary and find out more information about the destinations.  The last day to sign up for this trip is Wednesday, March 17th.

Can't make it on this year's trip or would like more of an adventure?  Think about joining us for next year's trip to the beautiful country of Belize. It is the only English-speaking nation in Central America, although you will get plenty of practice with your Spanish.  See Mayan ruins, go zip-lining through the rainforest, snorkel in the Caribbean and more!  The date for this trip will be set as soon as the calendar for the next school year has been aproved but it is sure to be a great Spring Break!  Remember that all students and parents are welcome.  If you are interested, please e-mail Mrs. Pierson-Straka at connect2spanish@gmail.com for more information.  Also, check out this website www.travelbelize.org to learn more about Belize.  (contributed by Courtney Pierson-Straka)
