THE VASQUEZ VOICE
LET'S SEE NOW, WHERE WERE WE . . . In our last episode, stellar progress was made at all other district schools, as reflected in the 2009-2010 CST (California Standardized Testing) scores. Well, the scores for 2010-2011 are in, and now it's our turn! Mean scores were up in nearly every category, with far fewer kids testing below basic. Ninth grade English scored a spectacular 31% Advanced and 25% Proficient. The mean score for Grade 9 Geometry was up 40 points. Tenth and eleventh grade also made advances. California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) results also showed gains, from an already excellent pass rate to an outstanding 90%. We love our returning teachers, but we are always happy to take on a few more. The English department has gained two new teachers to replace Jan Hudson, who is now Dean of Students, and Gina Watson, who has moved to the Social Studies department. Math and Science are making room for one more. Alas, the search is still on for a talented Biology teacher. Please extend a huge, hearty, rib-cracking welcome to Ruby Bhaijee, Wenni Seidell, and Kitinka Titchenell. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE THAT NEW SCHOOL? So to answer the most burning questions: Yes, all the bonds were sold--almost instantly, they were such a hot item. Ah, such heady days! Yes, the lame economy is threatening to put a drag on things. Maybe. No, the bond money hasn't gone anywhere. It is sitting in the bank earning interest. However, the planning money that the district had from the state many, many years ago is nearly exhausted. Why? Because the planning is just about done. No, the new school is not modular. It is stick construction and beautifully designed with the Acton CSD in mind. It will look much like the new public library. Yes, it is gorgeous. But it isn't just a pretty facade. The design supports the visual and performing arts, Culinary Arts, and laboratory sciences. It even has a gym and a library. Thought has been given to every surface from the floors to the landscaping to answer the needs of high school students while keeping the longterm maintenance costs to a minimum. So, where is it? Getting all its permits in order. The district has not hesitated in moving forward on the school, except to reject the modular plan--which was proving to be a very expensive way to build an inferior school. And yes, we do need funding above and beyond that provided by the bond. While we wait politely in queue for the crucial matching funds from the state, Superintendent Woodard and the school board are weighing all the existing options and probably inventing a few more.
